CNN —Akbar Al Baker is resigning as chief executive of Qatar Airways, marking a sudden end to one of the longest managerial reigns in the world of aviation. Al Baker, who has led the airline since 1997, will step down on Nov. 5. The move was unexpected, and no reason was given by Qatar Airways for his departure. Known as one of the industry’s most outspoken and influential executives, Al Baker is widely credited with transforming Qatar Airways into one of the world’s top airlines. In 2018, Al Baker apologized for making sexist comments at an International Air Transport Association meeting.

NEW YORK (AP) — Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar Al Baker is stepping down after 27 years leading the company. Al Baker's retirement will go into effect Nov. 5, Qatar Airways said Monday. In Monday's announcement, Qatar Airways said that it “has grown to become one of the most recognisable and trusted brands globally” under Al Baker's leadership. During his tenure at Qatar Airways, Al Baker became known for being one of the most outspoken leaders in the airline industry — with a hard-changing, sometimes confrontational approach that carried into negotiations with manufacturers and others. Qatar Airway's earned revenue of $20.9 billion over the fiscal year, up from $14.4 billion the year before.

Qatar Airways could not immediately be reached for comment. Airbus and Qatar Airways settled at the end of January, averting a rare and potentially damaging UK court trial in the jet sector. It was not immediately clear whether Al Baker was retiring from other posts, which include serving as the chief executive of Hamad International Airport and of Qatar Duty Free.

House Republicans ended Friday without naming a new House speaker. Congress is historically motivated by deadlines, but there's nothing forcing House Republicans to move forward. Five more people have been identified, but their names have not yet been released because the authorities have not been able to notify their families. The last time the death toll changed was on Aug. 21, the day that President Biden visited Lahaina, a span of time that reflects the new phase of the recovery effort, as well as the likelihood that many people’s bodies were reduced to unrecoverable ash. The actual death toll is unlikely to be determined for weeks or months. He said that ANDE’s technicians have left Maui, and that determining the final death toll would now largely rely on slow-paced detective work — for instance, interviewing the family and friends of those missing to determine if they were in Lahaina that day and where. The authorities will have to determine whether their investigative results are sufficient to declare those still missing as dead.

“DNA has been really extremely helpful for us, with the Rapid DNA,” said Alison Galloway, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of California-Santa Cruz, who helped identify remains during the Camp Fire. “If you don’t have that … then it’s a lot more difficult.”In general, forensic experts rely on DNA, dental analysis, fingerprints, medical hardware or circumstantial evidence to try to identify remains. “We’re still diligently working trying to make sure that we can identify (remains), and that’s why that DNA is so important, because we got fingerprints from three,” he said. Galloway, the forensics professor, said one of the advantages of the Rapid DNA technology is in quickly determining whether a DNA swab is usable. Maui asks for family members to come forwardFor Rapid DNA to work, family members of the missing have to willingly submit to DNA swabs.

It's part of the decades-long trend in which Americans have scaled back their charitable giving. There's evidence that this shift has impacted charitable giving. From 2000 to 2016, the share of Americans giving to religious causes fell from roughly 47% to 32%. Other donors have shifted their giving to political causes that wouldn't be classified as charitable giving either. Looking forward, Birkholz said he's optimistic the total giving figure will bounce back in 2023.

MAD HOUSE In a family home near London, designers Salvesen Graham didn’t want any room too perfect—in the British country-house tradition. Photo: Simon BrownAN ALMSHOUSE is, historically, a place of refuge where all are welcome, which is an excellent ethos for a warm and comfortable family home. Constructed to provide housing for rotating guests, the structure outside London comprised a row of rooms, with a chapel at the end. At the same time, the series of idiosyncratic and colorful rooms that would reflect the client’s “bubbly, vivacious and really fun” personality had to somehow cohere. A few of the unifying aesthetics: From a richly floral Josef Frank fabric on the family-room sofa to the blush-painted cabinets in the kitchen, “fresh, bright and breezy pinks and reds thread the property,” said Ms. Graham.
Passengers transiting through Hamad International Airport in Qatar’s capital can choose to leave the airport and join a free tour of some of the capital’s most famous attractions, including Souq Waqif and the Golden Masjid. Case in point: The Oryx lounge is just one floor (second) below the Oryx hotel (third), which means that a staff member is employed to hang out in the hotel lobby to run interference for lost travelers. “Hamad International Airport operates as a 24-hours, seven-days-a-week facility and therefore all the different passenger touchpoints follow the same timeline,” says Badr Mohammed Al Meer, chief operating officer for the airport. “We are constantly striving to offer the best and bespoke experiences for travelers, including our airport hotel offering. Considering that an average of 40 million people pass through Hamad International Airport per year, there is high demand for rooms at the Oryx.
WHEN MELANIE BURNS of Oklahoma City first entered the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, she was stunned by its sheer size and the pathways winding through its tented structures like a tangle of yarn. Though well-traveled and an old hand at hunting one-of-a-kind objets, she’d never experienced such an onslaught of potential riches. The duo led Ms. Burns to a shop layered deep behind other shops. “It was no more than about 14 feet square, and stacked high with the most beautiful hand-woven vintage tapestries I’ve ever seen,” Ms. Burns recalled. They are walking encyclopedias, they speak the language and when you shop with them, you don’t overpay.”
